Environmental Sustainability
Community Health Workers in Africa are estimated to use more than 200 million surgical masks per year. That equates to nearly 500 tonnes of unrecyclable single-use plastic waste. This volume of PPE waste has a profound impact on our environment.
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and contemplating such environmental challenges, the Stellenbosch Nanofiber Company in South Africa developed a reusable and more sustainable alternative.
Rethink Reusable Surgical Mask filters can be used 10 times, thereby eliminating 9 single-use masks, drastically reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of. In the African context, up to 200 million single-use masks (more than 500 tonnes) per year can be prevented from ending up in landfills and the ocean.
